Maki-e is a technique in which a picture or design is drawn in urushi lacquer on a lacquered fountain pen and then sprinkled with gold, silver, or other metal powder before it dries to fix it to the surface. Maki-e requires a great deal of skill to be applied to a curved surface such as a fountain pen.
