FAQ

  1. Remove the cartridge and rinse the nib (including the entire grip section) with water to lightly flush out the ink.
  2. Fill a container large enough to hold the nib (including the grip section) with water or lukewarm water, and let it soak for about a night.
  3. Thoroughly rinse the nib by running water from the side from where the cartridge is inserted toward the nib.
  4. When using a converter, first remove the ink. Then, with the converter still attached, repeatedly draw in and expel water or lukewarm water from a cup, just as you would when filling it with ink. The process is complete when no more ink color comes out.
  5. Allow the item to drain and dry for more than half a day before use. Using it while still damp may cause unpleasant odors, so be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

*Bacteria and germs may grow if you wash the nib with liquids other than tap water.

*Please never take the nib off the cover when you wash it. If you take the nib from the cover, we may have to charge you for our re-tuning services when you request them.

There is no set rule regarding the frequency of washing the nib. Wash the nib of your fountain pen when you are bothered by dirt, when you want to improve the ink flow or when you want to change the ink color or whenever you want. Please see the following FAQ.

Each type of ink has a different composition, and chemical changes may occur when different types of ink are mixed, which can cause a malfunction (ink clogging). Please make sure that you wash the nib when replacing ink.

Please see “How should I clean the nib of my fountain pen?” for details of the way to wash the nib.

Store your urushi lacquered fountain pen in a place that is not exposed to an extremely dry environment or direct sunlight.

We recommend storing your fountain pen in the attached blue pouch or any other pen case of your choice.

Please feel free to contact us, and we can offer such services as the tuning of the nib.

Depending on how you hold the pen, the nib may not be parallel to the paper, which can prevent ink from transferring to the paper, causing incomplete letters. This tendency is more pronounced with broader nibs or softer nibs (such as pens with elastic nibs, soft-medium, or soft-fine nibs). To address this, try positioning the nib more directly toward the paper, ensuring the pen point makes solid contact with the surface. Please feel free to contact us if this does not make any improvement or solve the problem.

We do not tune the nibs of fountain pens made by companies other than Nakaya Fountain Pen.

Ink may seep from the nib of a fountain pen due to factors such as vibrations or temperature changes, which cause the air inside to expand. Ink may also ooze from the heart-shaped breather hole when the nib and feed are tightly attached. This does not mean your fountain pen is broken, and it can still be used. If the seeping ink bothers you, feel free to wipe it off.

If you find that too much ink is seeping out and it’s bothering you, tuning the nib can help regulate the ink flow to some extent. Please feel free to contact us for assistance.

Please consult with us so we can assess whether repair is possible.

The way of holding a pen and writing with it varies enormously from person to person. Among a wide variety of writing implements available, only fountain pens can provide a writing experience tailored to each individual.

In hopes of offering a fountain pen that is suited to the writing style unique to each customer, we make tuning based on the handwriting record of each customer before delivering a fountain pen.

One of the characteristics of our fountain pens is the four-start thread, which has four thread grooves that start at every 90 degrees and allows users to close the cap quickly with the smaller number of turns.

We hope that the fountain pens produced by us will be used as part of the hands of our customers.

Hold a fountain pen so that the engraved side of the nib faces upward. We recommend holding a fountain pen at an angle at which it is held relatively flat (about 45 degrees to 60 degrees) because ink seeps out well at such an angle.

When you use a broad or broader nib, in particular, keep in mind to press the pen point of your fountain pen in parallel with the paper in order to prevent ink skipping.

Furthermore, users do not need to apply a firm pen pressure when writing with a fountain pen. Application of a firm pen pressure may cause the slit of the nib to spread or the ends of the nib tip to be out of alignment with each other.

Using a fountain pen frequently is synonymous with taking good care of it. When you are concerned about paper fiber or dirt sticking in the nib, wipe the nib with a soft cloth or wash it.

Close the cap tightly in order to prevent ink from drying except when you are using your fountain pen. If ink dries off, you will not be able to write with your fountain pen, or it may be difficult to clean it at home.

Strong vibrations may cause ink to ooze out. Therefore, close the cap tightly, and put your fountain pen in the attached pen pouch or a pen case of your choice so that your fountain pen will not be damaged when you carry it with you. We recommend that you keep the nib facing upward as much as possible when carrying your fountain pen with you.
