The whale is drawn with charcoal powder and finished with a black urushi lacquer polished. The eyes are made of tiny cut gold, and the whiskers are drawn one by one and sprinkled gold powder.The design is such that all the rough waves around the whale merge into one at the tip of the pen barrel. They are drawn with silver powder, and adding height differences to each wave, creates the looks of waves colliding violently. In addition, the waves lines of are drawn one by one with very thin golden lines. The motif is the Queen Mother of the West (Seiohbo), a goddess who grants immortality. The background is blurred by sprinkling gold powder and kinhirame (flattened gold powder). Clouds and other objects in the background are drawn by polishing Maki-e technique. The Queen Mother of the West is drawn using both Gin-yuji piling up technique and Kaki-wari technique. The kaki-wari technique is a technique to express lines by drawing around the line, so the lines look hollow. It is able to express the three-dimensional feelings and softness on the bulges of the cheeks and the folds of the clothes by kaki-wari technique. To draw very delicately in the details of such as the fine patterns on the clothes and use many soft curves make the result a luxurious and delicate finish.

Cigar Piccolo ONE-EYED JAPANESE DEMON
The pen has been finished with Shu-roiro, and the part around the crack was heaped up with the powder made of dry urushi.Again, we used Ginyuji technique (method of heaping the picture up with silver powder) for Dokkosho, a talisman used to keep evil spirits away, on the backside of the pen. The monster itself was depicted in Taka maki-e technique. All the details, including the direction of the gaze coming from the crack were carefully discussed with the client.

Cigar Piccolo AYAKASHI
This is a “Ayakashi”, Japanese folk monster, depicts a monster trying to escape by tearing the pen body.The exposed parts of the underlying fabric of the Negoro style were made to look like a rift. And the monster peeping for outside world from the rift is designed. The vermilion color used for the base and the detailed drawings such as the amulet pasted on the crevices and nails peeking through the gap also enhance the sense of Ayakashi looks.
