Adding silver powder to the Aka-tamenuri base to create gradation, and drew a Ascending Dragon motif on it using taka-Maki-e technique with silver powder.The extensive use of silver created a metallic texture.“Ascending Dragon”, as its name suggests, means rising, and it has been considered as a lucky icon to bring good luck since ancient times. It is also said that the Nyoi jewel the dragon has in its hand will make your wishes come true.It is often worshiped as a pair with the descending dragon, which descends from the sky.

Cigar Long DRAGONS "Kyoto Kenninji temple”
The motifs are inspired by the dragons of Kyoto Ken-nin-ji temple. It is expressed that dragons appear from clouds. The body of each dragon are described by Togi-kiri-Maki-e technique with silver powders. Clouds also are drawn with silver powders using Bokashi (gradation) technique. And for Ka-en (A fire flame), also using silver powders slightly mixed up with Shu (dark red) powders, by Togi-kiri Maki-e technique. This Togi-kiri Maki-e technique is used to create a texture similar to sumi-e (ink painting).By using black as the base, the dragon drawn in silver stands out and make a powerful finish.

We have created a makie of Unryu-zu, a masterpiece of Soga Shouhaku, an artist of the mid-Edo period.Silver color was harmonized on a black base while a similar taste to sumie was created by utilizing a technique of heaping up and polishing.We believe we were able to reproduce a touch of Shouhaku’s humor.The original painting stored in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) is a masterpiece of Shouhaku, which is painted in eight panel-folding screens. We have used the four panels from the left as a motif.

The basic methods used are a combination of iro-togidashi (gold powder base) and kakiwari (design is left in reverse in order to reveal the underlying layer of lacquer).Horse on cap: The black is ground back to a gold background (iro-togidasi). Samurai kariginu (garment worn in religious ceremonies):The tea color is ground back to a gold background (iro-togidashi). Horse on body: The white is ground back to a gold background (iro-togidasshi). Samurai kariginu: The blue is ground back to a gold background (iro-togidashi). The red for the harness is the same, with the details of the tassel being added with fine lines. The lines for the horse itself are produced using the kakiwari technique.
